Makaton

In school we use Makaton signing to support pupils with their communication and understanding. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs are used with speech, in spoken word order.  Makaton signing provides extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear.

We have identified core Makaton signs that staff are given training in to use consistently through school. The core signs are: Hello, toilet, stop, drink, play, sit, more, help, dinner, finished, work, bus, stand up, chose, look, listen, sad, happy, classroom, home, good morning, goodbye, come, go, now, later, give, where, what, book, bag, hot and ill. These signs are extended according to the students’ needs and initiatives such as sign of the week support this
